I have lived all of my 66 years in New Prague. It is my home; it has my heart. I taught high school English for 32 years in four different school districts (both public and private) and am now retired. Currently, I work part time as an online book reviewer and part time as a caregiver for a retired priest. I also volunteer with Southern Valley Alliance, a non-profit organization that works with victims of domestic violence; I volunteer for Special Olympics, and I donate plasma once per month. I live with my husband, Fred Simon; and my goofy dog, Reagan. And, I love pickleball!

My lifetime of experience in education gives me a wide perspective on the workings of our schools. I’ve coached volleyball, basketball, softball, track, and speech, I’ve directed high school musicals, plays and one acts, and I’ve been a Knowledge Bowl judge for three years. I have a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, which covered curriculum implementation, strategic planning, educational law, and teacher evaluation. That range of experience has given me a unique perspective on education. In my four years on the school board, I’ve served on the Policy Committee, the District Advisory Committee, Joint Powers Committee, MN State High School League committee, the Health and Wellness committee, the Facilities Task Force, and the MN State Concurrent Enrollment Committee. I’ve never missed a business meeting or work session, and I’ve attended dozens of workshops, conferences and classes to learn as much as I can about issues concerning our schools. Because I’ve lived in the New Prague area all of my life, I’d like to use my education, experience and energy to preserve and improve the quality of our school system.

I think there are two important issues all board members should be especially mindful of. Our first and most important responsibility is to keep people safe, and that is always my top priority. While the 2025 Facilities Task Force assessment rated our buildings secure, I’d like to spend some time evaluating all of our current safety protocols with students, staff, parents, community members and media. To that end, I have attended two national school safety seminars in the last month, and I learned that there is legislation going through MN congress that would make Safety and Facility Grants available to school districts to help finance any security updates we deem necessary, such as facility modifications (like more secure entrances) and even emergency communications devices (like staff panic buttons) for violence prevention and security. A second important issue for our district is MCA test scores. I think it’s important that we school board members educate ourselves on the purpose of statewide testing and the proper use of these scores in evaluating student success and progress. To that end, I have applied to become a member of the 2026-2027 Minnesota Department of Education Statewide Task Force to evaluate Minnesota’s current standardized tests and identify possible recommendations for future reform. These are serious issues, requiring active engagement of all board members.

Born and raised in New Prague, my work life began in the health insurance industry, first in Minneapolis, then Dallas, traveling south central US, meeting with small business owners and CEOs of corporations to implement employee benefits. Returning to New Prague, I began a teaching career that spanned 34 years, first subbing in the NPAS, then teaching for 32 years at St. Wenceslaus (earning a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, Emphasis on Moving Students Toward Resiliency), and finally homeschooling 2 special-needs NPAS boys. Unanimously voted in, I have served on the NPAS Board since March 2025. I also volunteer as a court advocate for Southern Valley Alliance. I hit the gym as often as I can and enjoy a cup of coffee with friends.

As a 4th generation area resident, I’ve always known this city to be a forward-thinking community. In fact, I live by the motto, “When you stop trying to be better, you stop being good.” There’s no question that our world is rapidly changing. Our public school systems must be resilient enough to change with it. Education has always been my calling, and I want to support our school district as part of a team that maintains academic excellence in our schools and adapts to the changing needs of our students.

Our priority should be to ensure the safety of our students. Security upgrades were made to our buildings this past summer. The Community Task Force’s recommendations need to be revisited to look at what may still need to be done, the potential cost to the district, and the possibility of tapping into newly available grants. With the advance of AI, I also want to ensure that our IT infrastructure is able to keep our students and staff safe online and maintain the confidentiality of student information. I will promote utilizing necessary resources to assist our IT department in staying ahead of this growing concern.

the Permanent School Fund was established as a resource for public education. Revenues were generated from school trust lands and investments held for the benefit of Minnesota students. The funds came from timber, mining, and other resources.
This proposal would change the amount from the fund that is distributed per pupil. What we would receive is based on enrollment. Per https://voteyesmnstudents.org, New Prague could receive over $130,000. It would help!
